For many families in Nigeria, education costs go far beyond school fees. Parents still have to buy textbooks, provide uniforms, pay for transport, cover exam fees, and meet other daily needs. When household income is low, all of these can make it hard for a child to stay in school.

We often say education is the path to a better future, but that path becomes difficult to follow when money is a problem. That is why financial support for students in Nigeria is still very important.

According to the World Bank’s Nigeria General Household Survey for the 2022/2023 school year, lack of money was one of the reasons some children could not attend school. In fact, 10.6% of parents who answered the question on why their child was not in school said it was because of lack of money.

The Cost of Staying in School

Even when basic education is said to be free, families still spend money to keep a child in school. There are learning materials to buy, transport fares to pay, uniforms to provide, exam fees and other things a student needs during the school year.

For a family already struggling with food, rent, healthcare and other household needs, these extra costs can become too much to handle.

UNICEF Nigeria has continued to point to economic challenges as one of the reasons some children struggle to stay in school, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The organization also reports that a large number of Nigerian children are still out of school.

This is why talking about education should not end with whether schools are available. We also need to ask whether children and young people have the support they need to stay in school and truly learn.

How Scholarships Can Make a Difference

A scholarship or bursary cannot solve every problem a student faces, but the right financial support at the right time can take a lot of pressure off families.

For a student who is already determined to stay in school, receiving support when it matters most can help them focus on their studies instead of worrying about how to pay for school-related expenses.

It also gives families a little breathing space while helping students stay on track with their education.

This kind of support is especially important for households where school costs have to compete with other basic needs.

Supporting Education Is Supporting the Future

Nigeria’s education challenges require contributions from government, schools, communities, families, private organisations and charitable foundations.

Recent education financing work also highlights the scale of the challenge. UNICEF reported in September 2026 that Nigeria’s education expenditure as a share of total government spending declined from 9.3% in 2015 to 3.6% in 2023, while also pointing to continuing concerns about access and learning outcomes.

This makes partnerships and targeted support particularly relevant. When organisations and individuals contribute to education, they can help create opportunities for students who might otherwise struggle to access the resources they need.

HCBBO Foundation and the Power of Opportunity

The HCBBO Foundation believes that opportunity can make a meaningful difference in the life of a young person.

Through its scholarship initiative, the Foundation has provided educational support to students and pupils in communities including Owo, Ose, Akure and Ile-Ife. Its work focuses on reaching young people who need support while encouraging them to continue their educational journey.

The Foundation’s recent scholarship activities have shown that educational support can reach beyond a single classroom. From students pursuing different academic paths to younger pupils beginning their educational journey, every opportunity can represent another step toward a better future.

Every Opportunity Matters

Supporting a student’s education doesn’t always mean changing the whole system. Sometimes it starts with helping one student overcome one barrier at the right time.

A scholarship, bursary, learning material or any form of support may look small from the outside, but to a student and family facing financial difficulty, it can mean a lot.

Building a stronger future for education is a responsibility we all share. When communities, organisations and individuals support students, they help create a system where lack of money does not have to be the reason a bright young person drops out of school.

Every opportunity matters. Every student deserves the chance to keep learning. And every effort to support education can contribute to a future with more possibilities.
